A dream like state is revealed in Keith Carters new work. This will be Keith Carters fourth exhibition at Photographs Do Not Bend Gallery since the gallery opened in 1995. Approximately thirty-five photographs will be exhibited.
Bubble, as seen above left, illustrates the surreal theme. Nothing seems to be in focus; all we understand is that the boy is posing under a bubble like object, like a space helmet. The reflections of the trees in the background may infer a surrounding body of water. The image is cerebral and playful like most of the imagery in the show.
Many photographs include animals, Carters signature element. There are alligators, dogs, swans, fish, and monkeys. There is a funny image of someone dressed in a bear costume, his hands on his hips standing within a landscape. Also included is a photograph of nude women posing in what seems to be an artists studio. This sublime image is quite unlike the others; it is somewhat like looking at a painting from an earlier Century.
A new series will be represented within the show, which is dramatically different from the black and white photographs of Carters career. It is called Talbots Shadow series, an homage to William Henry Fox Talbot, known as the father of photography. These color prints are similar to the photogenic drawings that Talbot did in the mid 1800s.
Keith Carter is an internationally renowned artist that is represented in many museum collections including the Dallas Museum of Art, The Amon Carter Museum, the Menil Collection, The Getty Museum and the Art Institute, Chicago. There are eight monographs published.
