December 10, 2004 – February 5, 2005

Photographs Do Not Bend Gallery will exhibit photographs by Nickolas Muray of the Mexican Surrealist artist, Frida Kahlo. This exhibition coincides with the release of a new book by Dr. Salomon Grimberg that explores the relationship between the two artists/lovers, Nickolas and Frida. The book, I Will Never Forget You…Frida Kahlo to Nickolas Muray, contains photographs of Frida Kahlo that have never been published. And some of the unpublished photographs will be exhibited in the gallery.

Nickolas Muray (1892–1965) was a Hungarian born artist that worked in New York as a photographer, specializing in portraits of celebrities. His work was often seen in Vanity Fair magazine. Nick’s friendship with the artist, Miguel Covarrubias, friend also to Diego Rivera and Frida, lead to the introduction to the couple when Nick visited Mexico. It was in 1931 when Nickolas and Frida’s love affair started. Later, when Frida had a solo exhibition at the famous Julian Levy gallery in New York, she continued their affair. Most of the portraits that will be exhibited were taken in Nick’s studio during that New York visit.

Highlights of the show include beautiful color portraits, never seen in this area. A stunning portrait of her sitting on a white bench in front of intense green flowered wallpaper reveals Nick’s propensity for portraiture. This is a painterly, surreal image paying homage to the surrealist herself.

In the small gallery portraits of Frida by the famous Lola Alvarez Bravo will also be featured. Lola’s portraits are black and white and full of life, as was this great artist, Frida Kahlo.

Photographs Do Not Bend Gallery will be the first venue for the release of the book mentioned above. American distribution will not start until 2005.
