Irving Arts Center, Focus Gallery
New York! New York! is a collaboration between the Irving Arts Center and Photographs Do Not Bend Gallery in conjunction with the Art Centers holiday season programming celebrating The Bright Lights of Broadway.
Photographs of the Big Apple will be on view at the Focus Gallery from December 12, 2003 until January 4, 2004. This theme exhibition is curated by Burt Finger of Photographs Do Not Bend Gallery in Dallas, TX, with the assistance of Ilona Albok Vitarius, daughter of John Albok (featured artist). The memorable photographs of Times Square, Broadway, Central Park and much more are by famous photographers including: John Albok, Ruth Orkin, Morris Engel, Neil Slavin, and local Dallas artist, Paul Greenberg.
Highlights of this show include a classic image of Central Park on a Sunday afternoon in 1938 by John Albok. Couples and families are rowing in the lake with the skyline of New York in the background, which includes the iconic Chrysler building and Empire State building. John Albok lived in New York on Madison Ave. and photographed the city during the decades of the 30s 70s. His photographs are in many museum institutions of note that include the New York Metropolitan Art Museum and the Getty Museum.
Ruth Orkins photograph of VE Day, 1945 show masses of people celebrating in Times Square. In the foreground are newsmen and cameras from CBS. A reproduction of the Statue of Liberty is erected in the center of Times Square and you see the sign that reads, Center for the Armed Forces to the left of the composition. This is a wonderful document of America commemorating the end of the perilous war in Europethe celebratory energy jumps off the image. Orkin is famous for her street photography in New York City, with several books published and major museums collecting her work.
A reception and informal talk will take place in the Focus Gallery on Saturday evening, December 13th from 7 9 PM. Burt Finger, curator of this exhibition, will lead the talk. The reception and talk are free and open to the public.
