JOCK STURGES: NEW WORK

April 15 - June 4, 2005

Artist Reception & Book Signing - Friday, April 15, 2005 from 6 – 8 PM

Photographs Do Not Bend Gallery presents a solo exhibition for internationally renowned artist, Jock Sturges. This is the artist’s second exhibition at PDNB.

Recently, Aperture published a monograph entitled, Notes, that features much of the photographs that will be exhibited. Within this book is a personal history of Jock’s experience in Montalivet, France. For decades he has lived part of his years in this naturist community on the coast of France. His writings detail his relationship with his subjects that sometimes represent three generations of family. The story of Adam & Eve comes to mind when you read what he and his subjects write about how they feel when they have nothing to hide and only to feel and live within a loving community in a paradise such as this.

“Jock often says that his images would be nothing without his subjects. I have gotten to know a fraction of the people that he works with, and they are, indeed, an astounding group. Never have I met a community of people who so fully inhabit their bodies, who belong so fully to their bones and muscles, and whose skin is so aware of the surrounding air. Jock’s brilliance is to make art not of these people, but with these people.” -David M. Lobenstine (friend and model for Jock)

Most of the photographs that will be exhibited are strikingly beautiful, poetic black and white nude portraits of Montalivet residents. There will be a few color portraits included, something new to most people familiar with this artist.
