| Chema Madoz: New Work September 13 - October 19, 2002 DADA Gallery Walk, Saturday, September 14, 2002 from 12 - 8 PM Chema Madoz: New Work features recent photographs from 2000 - 2002. Two years ago at Photographs Do Not Bend Gallery, this Spanish artist made a huge impression on the Dallas art scene with his surreal photographs. Local art critics and collectors were enamored with the work. Since Madozs mid career retrospective in Madrid at the Reina Sophia Museum, he has been enjoying international acclaim. The catalogue that was produced in conjunction with the exhibition is in its second printing and his solo exhibitions at galleries and museums have been numerous. He is also featured in the new artist book, Blink, published by Phaidon Press. Madozs cerebral subjects are often humorous. A spoon reflecting a shadow of a fork, an ice cube that looks like a single die, bobby pins in the shape of an eye, a pair of cuticle scissors with eyelashes--all provoke the funny bone and tease the eye. Each image is carefully constructed and well lit to draw the viewer in. New work will continue to explore the influence of the surrealists. Stones arranged as a bonsai tree or an impression of a foot are examples of Madozs skill at fooling the eye and making us think. In conjunction with his exhibition, Chema Madoz has been invited to speak at the University of North Texas in Denton, Texas on September 18th, 10 AM. This will be an artist lecture sponsored by the University of North Texas School of Visual Arts Visiting Artist Committee. The lecture will be in Rm. 226 of the Art Building. Madoz will also be present at the PDNB gallery opening, Friday, September 13, 2002 from 6 - 8 PM. |
